Reviews
Although my audio work is primarily in dialogue editing and mixing with music backgrounds, this Cheat Sheet Binder has certainly helped me solve some issues from time to time. And with it being a physical copy, it is so much easier to reach over and grab it from beside my desk, rather than having to remember where I stored a digital copy. Just wish I'd known a new version was coming out shortly after I purchased this!
The latest edition of the Mixing and Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder is a great learning tool (in conjunction with the video course) and is then available as a useful resource not only to remind yourself of the workflow, but to check back on the detail of the 'how' placed in context.
Everything you need for sound reinforcement at your fingertips ready and waiting! Who wouldn't live it?
Rob, I have to admit, since I've ordered the book I really haven't had the time to use the book on a mixing project. My band is adding a bunch of new songs, and that's the priority. From what I've gleaned from skimming the book it looks great. Looking forward to working with it on an actual recording project. Mike
The hard copy is excellent, well organized and clear. Had lots of trouble obtaining my electronic copy and had to contact their support to finally obtain it. Overall - a very good value, especially for my background with no formal training.
Very useful addition to the bookshelf in the studio. Thanks for the suggestion
Well designed layout, helpful content, and high quality, durable binding. Exceeded my expectations, have learned a lot, has been very helpful, and would definitely recommend.
This is a great resource to have by your side while working regardless of skill level. Concise and well organized, it covers the most important components of the mixing process - many of which I overlook as a beginner. It's also very nice to have a sturdy spiral bound physical copy.
It’s very informative. However, I don’t use a daw so a lot of the material is unusable to me. The principles are accurate and helpful in theory so I have to try to transpose the information to apply to my Tascam digital eight track.
The Cheat Sheet Binder remains out on my desk continuously because it has not only been a source of new , essential info for me, but reminds me of starting every session with a solid foundation...in other words, with the end in mind. And tat it is why we call it "reverse engineering!" Thank you, Mastering.com, Jason
I leveraged the information within the binder on a project that was moving into the mastering phase, and the information, suggestions, and recommendations were a HUGE value-add. Thank you. I still read the binder (which is in my studio book shelf as reference. Thanks again!!
Very clear and concise book with crucial information on several topics of the mixing and mastering proces. I use it all the time whenever I master or produce music. Very easy to utilize and apply. Especially the Frequency Balance Chart is very insightful!
As a book I think it’s great as a beginner producer it was very confusing and I didn’t understand what it meant maybe after a while of doing this I might be able to understand what it all means
I have a college degree in sound engineering from the era of multitrack reels and analogue gear. I've seen the transition of traditional expensive studios to the present well equiped digital home studios that are now part of our lives. One thing that hasn't change is the process to get consistently good mixes and masters. I've always used a bunch of hand writen notes and diagrams when I approach mixing and mastering. I've recently replaced those with the Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder as my checklist for mixing and mastering. It replaced a bunch of old and crumpled stacks of paper in one convient ring binder that is far easier to use. I remember recording a band in the early 90s in a professional Montreal recording studio. The band's lead guitar player had brought in his brother who was an airline pilot. Watching the Otari 2" tape reels flying at 30" a second, the 48 channels of the Westar board and the multiple racks of patch bays and processing gear he made the remark that it kind of looked like the inside of a cockpit and he jokingly asked me where was my checklists. To which I showed him the stack of paper notes I had prepared for recording and mixing. He actually suggested I should organize those like the check lists pilots use all the time. Thank you for doing excatly that with your excellent cheat book.
Brilliant tips but had to convert as most of the info was for digital desks... I use analogue but still very useful. An interesting read as well.
When I received the "Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheet" I was very impressed with the product quality. It's printed on heavy card stock with a binder that allows the pages to lie flat. That makes it very convenient when referencing during a session or simply studying. The print size is very easy to read and it has many diagrams to illustrate the concepts being described. It has tons of relevant information. I highly recommend it for the price.
The physical binder is built from high quality durable materials. The content contained within is also very high quality and relevant. The video access you get with the purchase is also top notch production. Extremely happy with the purchase and value.
VERY USEFUL WITH GREAT TIPS AND TECNIQUES.
I like the format and the clear explanations. I've already found it useful for my live shows. In addition, the binding makes it easy to leave it open to the page you need while you make adjustments. Worth the money!
It's great for quick fixes and steering you to posible problems
There is some good information but it was pointed to studio recording and I was looking for live sound reinforcement and this item didn't fit what I was looking for.
I found the cheat sheet incredibly helpful. I've read a fair amount about mixing and mastering (and continue to do so), but I found the cheat sheet very helpful in moving from theory to practice. The how-to guides on compression, for example, tell me things I've read elsewhere, but in a very handy and convenient format and acts as a brilliant aide memoire. I would certainly recommend it to anyone a bit nervous about mixing their own stuff! Hear the result on latest releases (The Razorwire Blues)
Really like this resource! Utilize it with our sound team at church as a quick go-to reference for our newer members...also works very well for a refresher resource for the "older" team members.
This binder is a great tool after completing the on-line mixing and mastering course. It's a handy reference that reinforces the concepts presented in the course. For me, one of the strongest learning experiences was in the use of compression, secondly the use of EQ. I've used the procedures presented to go back to some of my mixes and increase clarity and punch. Even if you've been mixing for many years, this binder is well worth it.
I have version 1 and version 1.1 of the Mixing and Mastering Cheatsheet Binder. I know version 2 is imminent, but I have thoroughly enjoyed using these binders and I refer to them all the time - not least in the regular Fix The Mix challenges at Mastering.com. Thoroughly recommended, as is all of their stuff.
This is a handy reference guide, though somewhat abridged. The diagrams are nice & clear. The binder is good quality but at only 30 pages, including the cover, it's quite expensive. (Bobby Owinowsky's Mixing Engineer's Handbook is only £10 more and has nearly 400 pages) The addition of £7.39 for the shipping felt a bit like Ryanair to me, as the shipping would have actually cost a whole lot less than that. I almost cancelled the order when I saw the shipping cost.
I haven't read it. It is still too complicated to start.
GREAT binder with guidelines and tips for every level of experience = HIGHLY recommended!
I am enjoying it. It is very, very helpful
In the couple of months since this book arrived it has become an absolute go to at the beginning of any mix session! Top bit of kit.
I like that all the main things are covered and it covers things like EQ and Compression in a clear way, responding to how a recording sounds to your ears and the solutions given give you a sense of control rather than reaching for another plugin. Sits on my desk. You should buy it and let it sit on yours.
The physical cheat sheet sits permanently and within easy reach next to my computer. There’s a lot to take in and remember in the world of production and this resource is an essential tool in my production toolkit. It’s very easy to navigate without having to read pages of preamble. I have found it well designed and the physical quality is substantial. Highly recommended.
Fantastic simple product that has enhanced my understanding brought clarity to my mixes.
The Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder is my go to tool. Its helped re-tune my ears and create better sounding audio tracks. The less time I spend trouble shooting and guessing the better my ears and mixes become.
The Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder is my go to tool. Its helped re-tune my ears and create better sounding audio tracks. The less time I spend trouble shooting and guessing the better my ears and mixes become.
It was easy to follow. I used it for compression settings and it worked great. I also used the EQ section to clean up my mix. Very impressive, I would recommend this to anyone struggling to create listenable tracks.
What I liked about the binder material was that it was clear and accurately explained. I would tell anyone that is interested in improving their sound immediately, that this cheat sheet binder is a must. A no brainer.
I bought the binder that goes with the mixing portion of The Reverse Engineer. Its a really good quick reference to the course videos and worksheets.
Quick reference guide helps with brainfa*ts
I love the format and the print quality. I also LOVE the fact I can keep it on my desk as a reference when mixing.
There was not enough visual information showing how adjustments were obtain.
It is well made and includes a lot of useful info. I would definitely recommend it!
Took my mastering skills to another level.
Took my mastering skills to another level.
It’s laid out clearly. I find it very helpful!
Absolutely excellent. I cannot praise mastering.com highly enough.
It’s been my go to to get things started and finished. Well put together.
I like the book, but I felt it was only helpful to mastering and not mixing
It's nice to have a physical book along side my DAW, rather than having to look at another computer screen or online page for some help. The book is very well constructed - very sturdy. It is not as detailed on certain things for logic, such as EQ, and it is not a totally comprehensive resource for this, but it is a useful tool. I appreciate the care and helpfulness of the book, and am glad that I purchased it.
So much info but well organized. What a great product.
Handy reference guide , as I'm partially deaf it's a great aid to help get it as right as I can ,.very useful info as well ,.
It has been a great reference guide to help me mix my shows and work out some issues I had with eq frequencies.
It's very helpful, particularly with the additional videos. I'm glad I bought it. It's given me another view point to explore. There were no mastering tips in the binder, it is really a mixing cheat sheet. I could not get the mastering video to run in the mid section. I'm not sure why.
A very good purchase for me. The crib sheet on its own is ok, but not five star. What makes this so good is the free online course that accompanies it. The two things together are absolutely superb. I’m still making my way through the course but have learned a ton of very useful stuff that I’m already using to good effect. Whole thing is extremely useful and very good value for money.
Very nice print but the most important part is the info. Very useful info. I've been a sound engineer for nearly 30 years and was looking for a quick way to reference things that I already knew and it's just decent for that. I'll keep it handy but overall I'm a tab bit underwhelmed. I do appreciate it for what it is and will hopeful get some use from it.
I received my copy last week and I have to congratulate Mastering.com not only on the quality of the content but also the physical book. It’s substantial and not too busy but it focuses on the different aspects of the mixing process which, for someone like me who keeps forgetting the details sometimes, is a handy reference guide to have at hand. I can highly recommend it.
I bought this product for our church Media Team. Most have never touched a soundboard before. I found the Cheat Sheet was a little too advanced for them. Since they are still new to sound mixing I am having to stop rehearsal and go back and help them through issues. It does come in handy for me when I am looking for a quick answer, but for my Team there needs to be perhaps a beginners guide to sound mixing.
This manual is exactly what I needed, the quality is top notch! I also love that I have a digital copy to look over when out and about, that way my physical copy will stay in the beautiful shape for years to come. The visual and text is perfect for when You need a quick reference for mixing and mastering!
I've been recording since 1970, starting with an Ampeg reel to reel and currently using a DAW (Pro Tools Studio) This binder, combined with their Compression and EQ courses had allowed me to go back and revisit a number of my earlier recordings and make significant improvements. This is a great and easy to use cheat sheet for all the little things that you might not remember or clearly understand. I've only just started using it but can clearly see its value. Nicely compiled into a durable product. I wish I had it years ago.
I just purchased Mixing and Mastering Cheat sheet and instantly my music started sounded better. Small things I never had thought of and a few big things I never knew. Love it!
Excellent info and very thorough!
I now have my processing power amp mixed so we'll I can hear every decibel of sound that was hidden below noise. I have an 800 watt system and it is an experience. It will play a giant part in digital composition for me, too. It's cool, and the binding really makes it worth it! It came right away!
Being a self taught sound person, I have learned from a college professor which his start was sound in a band, and the a studio/concert sound person I have learned but the Mix & Mastering Cheat Sheet has answered several question I have had. This will greatly improve the sound quality that I do now.
All my problems under one roof, happy days!
I’ve been trying to teach myself how to mix for years now and this book really helps me remember key guidelines and helps with my workflow.
This is a great resource for anyone looking to improve their mixing and mastering skills. I’ve improved my mix quality dramatically in just a couple of weeks Highly recommended!!!!
Is great every audio engineer should have
This is a highly functional guide to the process. The guide doesn't insist on what sounds good or otherwise, instead it helps the user obtain the finished product of what sounds good to them.
I have found this an excellent quick reference when you need a nudge!!!!
Very useful guide, will keep it close when mixing
Great cheat sheet binder. Very applicable to my mixing needs. Also, the free courses are an additional bonus!
Great resource- easy to understand how to make your mixes better. Love the “It sounds like” master frequency cheat sheet
Very good free courses except the mixing and mastering seemed to go a bit fast to follow the Logic Pro actions especially the track grouping but overall very good content!
I really appreciate all the information you guys provided in the binder, however I think you guys should have demonstration videos in multiple DAW”S like FL Studios, Pro Tools etc.
Concise and useful explanations, particularly for entry level audio engineer students. Great print quality, easy references covering all essential basics. Item arrived very quickly. All good
Great Binder - so useful as an easy reference tool; gives you a basic platform from which you build a successful mix. Big fan of you guys - did the original Mastering course with Blake - and tune in when I can for videos - learnt so much. I use the binder throughout the process - in this image I am 'pre-studio' in my music room where I prep material.
Thank you for putting this information together. I’ve been collecting my notes and trying to create some kind of order out of them. You’ve done all of that for me, plus you’ve included things I would have missed. It’s so helpful to have everything in one place and in the right order to keep me on track. Plus my notes were loose and flying all around all the time. LOL!
This 30-page guide is a perfect handy reference to the fundamentals of mixing. Mastering.com provides a video series that accompanies the book, and honestly it's like I've found the missing puzzle pieces to my understanding of not just what to do, but the why behind it. It teaches you to think.
It's full of useful practical information, but is written with an engineer's mindset. I'm not sure how useful it is for artists who work more intuitively... Response from Mastering.com: Hi Jack, as this book is focus on mixing and mastering it can get a little technical for sure, but please make sure you watch the course videos as we break everything down and demonstrate so anyone can apply!
I love it! I purchased the download and the hard copy which is very well produced, both content and durability. I will keep the hard copy in my gig back as I do live audio. Thank you!!
Superr helpful, the book itself is very high quality and seems durable, the information inside is great, and I also love the associated course and everything else you get access to
It is a very good resource for troubleshooting on the fly. Very good learning/teaching tool for newcomers to mastering and live mixing. Long needed resource. Thank you.
It seems well laid out but does not breakdown many elements for the novice like me. For example for "Gain Staging" just exactly how does one achieve "levels for headroom" and how much headroom? How do we gauge that? You can't just make a statement without additional explanation of what it is you're saying. This COULD be a better tool if it had more detail and didn't assume one knew all the terms like "LUFS" and "dBFS". Reply from Mastering.com: Hi Terry! Please refer to the video course that goes with the binder - that's an important element of this bundle, where we go into a lot more depth on what the terms mean, and show demonstrations inside the DAW
Great!!!
Great binder with some really useful guidance as you proceed through the mix. Not yet used it as yet as moving home and about to set up my new studio. Set out is intuitive and clear.
I love it. As a drummer with very little working knowledge of recording and engineering this cheat sheet binder is a huge asset. Easy to understand and how and why to do things in pursuit of ones audio goals. I will highly recommend it to like minded musicians.
Hi Rob, I love all of the cheat-sheets. They have been especially useful now that I'm in the later sections of the Mastering course, IE: Limiter Stress Test, and Foundational sections as well. As you know there has been a lot of churn to these topics, and I've been trying to keep up with all of the revisions. Now that I have multiple versions of these documents at home, I see a need for revision numbers, versions, even something like "Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder Version 4" on the cover would be helpful. Other than that, the content is top-notch! Thanks!
Excellent, well laid out, easy to understand. Sort of a "If you want THIS, do THAT' approach. With no preaching or long winded explanations
I know mixing becomes second nature, and it is an art that you have to learn for yourself beyond what anyone can teach you, but as someone who is starting out from ground 0, I purchased the mixing cheat sheet binder so I could use it along side a 10 week mixing class I am taking for a program I am in. Each week is a new concept and this binder has been amazing to have as a starting point reference. It is so well laid out and covers the most important things you need to know for each step of the mix. The pictures in it and where settings should start at before you tweak them to taste has been a life saver for me. Also I did not expect it to feel as high quality as it does lol. I was expecting laminated printed pages, but it physically feels and looks nice which is fun. It's sturdy so I dont have to worry too much about it when throwing it into my backpack.
Although I have been doing my own mixing for about 4 years now, I never had a good solid understanding of the ins and outs of getting that great mix. New to Mastering.com, but at a glaze, the information on the binder I purchase is very detailed and the tutorials and information system establish in this program will absolutely increase and improve the mystories of great sounding productions. Very satisfied thus far, and the community here is outstanding, so many great professionals and up and coming producers are here filled with ideas and egar to collaborate. I recommend this product and organization no questions asked. The Julio Matta Project.
Very well made and put together nicely! Much better than what I expected. Looking forward to using it next time I’m doing any new projects……
Intuitive, easy to follow. I'm still learning as I mix
I've been recording since 1970, starting with an Ampeg reel to reel. This binder allowed me to go back and revisit a number of my earlier recordings and make significant improvements. This is a great and easy to use cheat sheet for all the little things that you might not remember or clearly understand. I wish I had it years ago.
First off, I really like the info and layout, I'm interested in V2 as well. As I slowly ramp up my edu and investment. I keep thinking of what a client would be interested in as they work with me. I think parts of this booklet would be a great item for them. Gives good explinations and language that helps them communicate with me or any other engeneer and or producer. The only item that would finish the reference is to lamanate it. Keeps the coffee stains at bay.
The cheat sheet binder is great. Tons of useful information organized for quick reference. But what impressed me the most was the outstanding quality. Every page printed on durable card stock. It's worth every penny.
Excellent material broken down that even an intermediate old fogey like me can understand it. This book has helped me get my mixes better and further than ever before!
Exceptionally laid out and easy to follow. Full of very useful kmowledge. And really makes you go "Duh!! Why didn't I see that?" on many mixing and mastering topics. Well done guys!!!
Excellent book of good tips and laid out very nicely. Could go deeper but i am sure that will come in the next edition.
I already knew about 50 percent of mixing going into this purchase. This is a great book and gives you understanding of compressors, limiters etc. it's easy to understand and I don't second guess myself. An engineer should always trust their ears and this book will get you the tools to get there.
It is super cool, makes sense, working on my mixing Make it much easier..
Useful little folder for a quick insight when mixing alone into what’s needed .
The Mixing and Mastering Cheat Sheet Binder is a great asset, especially in combination with the accompanying Mastering.com 101 course and the online walkthrough session. Not only does the binder give a structured approach to mixing and mastering, and clear guidance on how to manipulate musical sound with the various tools (e.g. compressor, EQ, limiter) but also the why.
Great tool to keep around for novice up to advanced audio engineers and music producers. Good to self-check and remind you about fundamental principles in mixing and mastering, to include explanations of the why's behind the whats. Most importantly, it includes usable processes for applying the information in the cheat sheet. The booklet also includes information about common audio processing plug-ins or hardware units/tools used in mixing and mastering. If you are a visual learner, there are helpful videos with explanations that match the cheat sheet.
Got the PDF and the binder. I went to Full Sail and my instructors didn't make it this clear and easy to understand. Definitely recommend!
