Attack and Release
Action Items
For this activity, I just want you to focus on one thing…
Head back to the compression visualizer and experiment with the attack and release sliders.
To make it easier to see what’s happening, set the threshold so that it’s a little bit above the two crevices in the waveform, and set the ratio to 4:1.
Then slide the attack and release around to your heart’s content.
Notice how the compression is really aggressive when the attack is fast, but dramatically falls off once you back off the attack. Those peaks are really quick!
Notice how the shorter releases are creating a thicker waveform, but the longer release times keep the waveform looking natural. Also notice how the longer release times have more gain reduction happening… even though the waveform looks way less compressed!
Ask yourself this: What do you think each of these different combinations sounds like? Why?
That’s the million-dollar question. We’ll be covering this in future videos.
